Real-Time Chat

What is Real-Time Chat?

Chat, also known as online chat or live chat, is a way of communication and interaction in real-time on the website. This communication is based on text messages but also can have rich media such as video, audio, gifs or emoji and stickers. The first real-time chat system created by David R. Woolley and Doug Brown in 1973, was known as Talkomatic.

Chat requires software or messenger application. Some chats require users to register or to sign up to join chat group and some doesn’t have registration forms.

Also, real-time chat uses web-based apps that allow communication in a multi-user environment that is usually addressed directly but is anonymous among users.

Popular programs and protocols for real-time chat include:

  • Apple’s Messages
  • AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
  • Google Talk
  • Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
  • RetroShare (encrypted)
  • Skype
  • WhatsApp
  • Windows Live Messenger
